This liturgy will provide you with a straightforward way to hold a Service of the Word in your own home.  As you worship, remember that simply following the instructions on this page will NOT create worship.  Worship is an encounter with God in which we receive His gifts of forgiveness and respond with prayer and praise.  The “active ingredient” of worship is faith.  As you follow these instructions, your worship begins with believing that God is present and expecting that God will have something to say to you during this time.

Read the words in bold aloud.  If you are fortunate to be worshiping with others, you may designate one individual the leader, and read the liturgy responsively as indicated by L: (leader) and R: (response).  Some elements of this service are links to videos which will play when you click on them.  Feel free to include as much or as little of the suggested music as you prefer, or to substitute live music in your home for the videos included here.

Each worshiper will need a pencil and paper during the confession.

Confession

L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
R: Amen.

L: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
R: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)

At this time, each person silently confesses his or her sin to God.  Individual sins may be written (children may wish to draw) on a piece of paper.  After an appropriate length of time, continue:

All: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.  Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.  For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me… Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.  Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:1-3)

Scratch out the sins that have been confessed on paper, drawing a cross over the whole page.  Then speak out loud the sure and certain word of God that follows:

L: Brothers and sisters in Christ, the Lord indeed hears us when we call upon Him. And, through Hebrews, chapter 8, the Lord responds by saying that, “[He] will be merciful towards [our] iniquities, and [He] will remember [our] sins no more.” Through the death and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus, the Lord has indeed shown us mercy, and He has forgotten every last sin. In the Name of Jesus, you are forgiven.

All: Thanks be to God! Amen.

Scripture Reading

Ecclesiastes 2:17-26

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless. A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

Statement of Faith

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What hopes and dreams have been disrupted for you this year?  Have you reacted with anger?  With despair?
  2. How does it help when you see your hopes and dreams for this world as an appetizer, instead of as the main course?

Never forget: Jesus is worthy of our hopes and our dreams!  Our deepest hopes will be fulfilled in the End, because of His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.

Prayers

L: We now pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all others according to their needs. Please join me.

L: God of all wisdom, You have granted us with material gifts for our delight and pleasure, far more than we could ever ask for in this life. And, for these, we give You thanks. But You have also given us Your Son, a gift that far outweighs anything else. We therefore ask for forgiveness in all those moments we have placed our material gifts over Him. Restore our desire for Your Eternal Kingdom, that we may see the temporal nature of our gifts and earthly pursuits, and set our hearts evermore on You. Lord, in Your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer

L: Merciful Father, the brokenness and pain that so many suffer in this world are immense. We give You thanks for providing numerous medical breakthroughs and technology to help combat this brokenness, but we also know that You alone bring us true healing. We therefore lift up to You all those suffering in body and soul, especially Franklin and Sharon Keller, Bev Bergmann, Marilyn Seefeld, Elaine Riemer, Brian Forke, Ruth Gierach, Earlean Brown, and Howard Pipkorn. We also lift those whom we now name in our hearts or aloud [brief time to reflect on those in our lives]. Grant them this healing, and strengthen their Faith during this season. Lord, in Your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer

L: Lord of the Harvest, Your Son reminds us how the harvest of Your Kingdom is plentiful, yet the laborers are few. We thank You for the laborers You have already raised up, both here at home and abroad, especially David & Rachel Baker as well as Rev. Gary Schuschke (serving in Germany). Continue to lead and nurture their faith as they share it with those whom You have put in their path, and please raise up more laborers to do the same. Lord, in Your Mercy,

All: Hear our prayer

L: Almighty Lord, we thank You for those serving our nation in the military, especially Sarah Geidel (Reserves), Rebecca Guild (serving in San Diego), Akan Udoeyop (serving in Germany), Madison Kessel Lyon (serving in Germany), Nicholas Zanow (Charleston, South Carolina), Kurt Degner (WI National Guard), and Mark Liedtke (Fort Lewis, Washington). Continue to protect, lead, and guide them both in their Faith and their duties, and return them home safely to their families. Lord, in Your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer

L: Lord of life, the disease of our sin has separated us from Your presence. Yet, in Your infinite love, You sent Your Son, Jesus, to pay the ultimate price for our transgression, that death may not have the last word. We thank You for the life of Ernest Urbahn (husband of Lola, father of Carol Daly, and grandfather of Brian Daly) and for all the ways You have worked in and through him during his time on earth. Grant Ernest’s family Your healing and comforting presence during this time, and bring them Your peace. Lord, in Your mercy,

All: Hear our prayer

L: Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom and teach us to pray…

ALL: Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen

Closing Blessing

L: May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
R: Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)

Additional Scripture

“Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.

Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
