This liturgy will provide you with a straightforward way to hold a Service of the Word in your own home. As you worship, remember that simply following the instructions on this page will NOT create worship. Worship is an encounter with God in which we receive His gifts of forgiveness and respond with prayer and praise. The “active ingredient” of worship is faith. As you follow these instructions, your worship begins with believing that God is present and expecting that God will have something to say to you during this time.
Read the words in bold aloud. If you are fortunate to be worshiping with others, you may designate one individual the leader, and read the liturgy responsively as indicated by L: (leader) and R: (response). Some elements of this service are links to videos which will play when you click on them. Feel free to include as much or as little of the suggested music as you prefer, or to substitute live music in your home for the videos included here.
Each worshiper will need a pencil and paper during the confession.
L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
L: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
R: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)
At this time, each person silently confesses his or her sin to God. Individual sins may be written (children may wish to draw) on a piece of paper. After an appropriate length of time, continue:
All: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me… Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:1-3)
Scratch out the sins that have been confessed on paper, drawing a cross over the whole page. Then speak out loud the sure and certain word of God that follows:
L: Brothers and sisters, we know the Lord hears us when we cry out to Him. And, through the words of St. Paul in Ephesians 1, the Lord reminds us how, “In [Jesus] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” Because of our Lord’s gracious love, He sent His Son, Jesus, to die and rise for us, that we may be redeemed from our sins. In the Name of Jesus, you are forgiven.
All: Thanks be to God! Amen.
1 John 4:1-10
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Statement of Faith
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Sermon & Reflection
- What makes you angry right now? What are your fears right now? How has Satan been fanning those into flames?
- Which voices has God been using to consistently move you in the direction of love for others? Do you have opportunities to be that voice for others?
NEVER FORGET: Through the sacrifice of Jesus, God has loved the whole world so powerfully that we have nothing left to fear, and His voice calls us to believe His love and to be instruments of it.
L: We now pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all others according to their needs. Please join me.
We now pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all others according to their needs. Please pray with me.
Everlasting Lord, in a world full of voices that are constantly changing, Your voice and Your Word do not. We thank You for remaining steadfast with us, even when we haven’t with You. Forgive us when the voices of this world carry us away from Yours. Grant us Your Spirit, so that we remain steadfast in Your Truth amidst the conflicting currents of this world. Lord, in Your mercy,
ALL: Hear our prayer.
L: Loving Lord, our present life offers many solutions for our physical and spiritual well-being. Yet these solutions are only temporal and fall far short of the healing and peace which You alone give. We therefore ask Your healing hand to come upon all those presently sick in body and soul, especially Frank & Sharon Keller, Alice Frenz, Bev Bergmann, Deb Balsiger, Ruth Gierach, Earlean Brown, Marilyn Seefeld, Elaine Riemer, and Ken Riemer. We also lift those whom we now name in our hearts or aloud [brief time to reflect on those in our lives]. Bring them to a full recovery, and turn their eyes ever upward to the promises of Your Eternal Kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy, Lord, in Your mercy, Lord, in Your mercy,
ALL: Hear our prayer.
L: Lord of Hosts, You have raised us up to be Your hands, feet, and voice to a dying world in need of You. We ask You to go before us in this mission, being our protector and guide. And we ask the same for all those serving abroad, especially David & Rachel Baker as well as Peter and Lucy Hoffmann (serving in the Czech Republic). Grant us Your Spirit in this mission, along with the boldness to live and teach according to Your Word. Lord, in Your Mercy,
ALL: Hear our prayer.
L: Almighty Lord, we thank You for those serving our nation in the military, especially Sarah Geidel (Reserves), Rebecca Guild (serving in San Diego), Akan Udoeyop (serving in Germany), Madison Kessel Lyon (serving in Germany), Nicholas Zanow (Charleston, South Carolina), Kurt Degner (WI National Guard), and Mark Liedtke (Fort Lewis, Washington). Continue to protect, lead, and guide them both in their Faith and their duties, and return them home safely to their families.
ALL: Hear our prayer.
L: Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom and teach us to pray…
ALL: Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen
L: May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
R: Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)

“‘Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly. “‘Do not go about spreading slander among your people. “‘Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life. I am the LORD. “‘Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt. “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
