This liturgy will provide you with a straightforward way to hold a Service of the Word in your own home.  As you worship, remember that simply following the instructions on this page will NOT create worship.  Worship is an encounter with God in which we receive His gifts of forgiveness and respond with prayer and praise.  The “active ingredient” of worship is faith.  As you follow these instructions, your worship begins with believing that God is present and expecting that God will have something to say to you during this time.

Read the words in bold aloud.  If you are fortunate to be worshiping with others, you may designate one individual the leader, and read the liturgy responsively as indicated by L: (leader) and R: (response).  Some elements of this service are links to videos which will play when you click on them.  Feel free to include as much or as little of the suggested music as you prefer, or to substitute live music in your home for the videos included here.

Each worshiper will need a pencil and paper during the confession.

Opening Song

L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
R: Amen.

L: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
R: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9)

At this time, each person silently confesses his or her sin to God.  Individual sins may be written (children may wish to draw) on a piece of paper.  After an appropriate length of time, continue:

All: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.  Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.  For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me… Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.  Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:1-3)

Scratch out the sins that have been confessed on paper, drawing a cross over the whole page.  Then speak out loud the sure and certain word of God that follows:

L: Brothers and sisters, God has heard your confession. And He responds through the words of Paul in Colossians 1, for, “[God] has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

Through the death and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus, and through the faith He has graciously given us, we have indeed been transferred from this dominion into God’s eternal kingdom. Therefore, in the Name of Jesus, you are forgiven.

All: Thanks be to God! Amen.

Scripture Reading

Psalm 121:1-8

I lift up my eyes to the hills– where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip– he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you– the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm– he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Statement of Faith

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day He rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When have you been particularly aware of the danger?  Have you been focused on danger to body or danger to soul?
  2. In those moments, how can you find confidence to lift your eyes to Jesus and know that you are in His hands?

NEVER FORGET: Jesus has already given you victory, body and soul, over every danger in this world.

L: We now pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all others according to their needs. Please join me.

Father, we look for strength and success, but so often You are at work through weakness and failure.  Give us faith to trust that You use all things for good, and work in us the desire to see You glorified, so that we would rather see Your glory than our success in the eyes of this world.  Lord, in Your mercy,

ALL: Hear our prayer.

L: Thank You, Father, for the gift of life and salvation through Jesus.  Nothing in this world compares to knowing You.  Please bless the efforts of Your faithful missionaries around the world, who have given up so much in order to share that priceless gift.  Use these difficult times to raise up leaders within Your church, and especially bless the efforts of David and Rachel in Mongolia, and Danelle in the Dominican Republic.  Lord, in Your mercy,

ALL: Hear our prayer.

L: Father, You alone are able to grant peace and safety in this world.  Teach us to look to You, and to appreciate those whom You use in order to give those gifts.  We pray especially for our police, firefighters, EMTs, and those serving in the military: Sarah, Rebecca, Akan, Madison, Nick, and Kurt.  Lord, in Your mercy,

ALL: Hear our prayer.

L: Father, through the ministry of Jesus, You healed all those who came to You in need.  Give us wisdom to seek You out when we struggle, and please grant healing to Marissa Christian’s family: Tim, Debbie, and Emily.  Please heal Debby Balsiger, Ken Riemer, Helen Suelflow, Bev Bergmann, Brian Brauer, and the grandson of Lois and Lowell Fink.  Use this time of weakness and suffering to make Your power evident to them and their loved ones.  Lord, in Your mercy,

ALL: Hear our prayer.

L: Father, we praise You, because You have overcome death for us through the sacrifice of Jesus and His resurrection.  Please comfort Earleen Brown and her family as well as the family of Maxine Becker.  Turn our eyes to Jesus and give us confidence that because He lives, whoever believes in Him will live forever.  Lord, in Your mercy,

ALL: Hear our prayer.

L: Lord, remember us in Your Kingdom and teach us to pray…

ALL: Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen

Closing Blessing

L: May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
R: Amen. (Hebrews 13:20-21)

Additional Scripture

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.
